OPEN DOOR PRESCHOOLS 2016 FALL FÊTE
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE... FEATURING BEATLEMANIA64

Since 1975, Open Door Preschools has been inspired by love for, and from, the Austin community.  And so it is quite fitting that the theme for this year’s Fall Fête was All You Need Is Love… Featuring Beatlemania64 on September 24, 2016.  * Fall Fête is our annual fundraiser and grown up party where we celebrate Open Door’s unique, nationally-accredited model of special needs inclusion and economic diversity.

We were delighted to present the Opening New Doors Award to two outstanding individuals who exemplify and promote social justice and inclusion in the Austin community: State Representative Elliott Naishtat, and Jennifer Long, Executive Director of Casa Marianella.  Additionally, we presented former Open Door Board Chair Tamara Atkinson with the Visionary Volunteer Award for the deep and lasting impact her contributions have made on Open Door.  Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and Good Shepherd on the Hill received the HELP! Award for hosting our Central School during the flooding repairs.

We were amazed at the generosity of our sponsors and guests to* Help! honor these pillars of the Austin community on September 24 as we Came Together at Trinity Hall with music by the amazing Beatlemania64, catering by Word of Mouth, cocktails by Tito’s, and a silent auction focused on Life, Music, and Art… Fall Fête just keeps Getting Better All The Time.

If, in fact, all we needed was love, Open Door would have an incredible balance sheet.  But that is hardly the case.  Open Door has been able to succeed over the years only because of A Little Help From (our) Friends.  We celebrate our 2016 Fall Fête sponsors who helped ensure we can continue to make our program accessible to families of all income levels and children of diverse needs and backgrounds:

Happy Birthday, open Door Preschools!
2016 Birthday Party & Taco Takedown!

Open Door Class of 1975!

Open Door Class of 1975!

The Open Door community celebrated it's 41st birthday at Threadgill's on April 30th with cakewalks, games, and a performance by the Que Pastas. The highlight of the day was the annual Taco Takedown competition featuring a team competition between our 3 locations.
* The Taconators of the Central School were the winning team, raising $2,593!  M Station was a very close second with a total of $2,487. And, a very significant $1,048 was brought in by the East Team.
The coveted custom-designed Taco Takedown trophy was earned the hard way—with 18 tacos consumed in 10 minutes—by M Station parent Michael Garcia.
Each schools' Teacher of the Year was recognized in a special presentation as well. Congratulations to LaTrice Jone (East), Christal Fox (M Station) and Patti Ruiz (Central)!
* Event proceeds support Open Door's inclusive, high-quality programs—including tuition support for families facing financial challenges and optimal services for children with special needs.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS IN AUSTIN: SEPTEMBER 26, 2015

To celebrate Austin nonprofit Open Door Preschools’ 40th Anniversary, Fair Market, an event site on the east side of downtown Austin, was transformed into Rick’s Café Américain from Casablanca. Moroccan-patterned lighting effects, candles and palm trees transformed the raw space with a dramatic nod to the 1940s film and old Morocco. Music from Open Door parent Elizabeth McQueen and her Trio added lively spirit to the event. A Moroccan buffet by Whole Foods Market Catering, signature cocktails, and diversions by Typewriter Rodeo and Quick Draw Photo Booth ensured a good time for all.

The evening centered around three guests of honor, each of whom have lived Open Door’s values: Brandon Lack, an artist, Open Door volunteer and alumnus with Down syndrome. In 1975, Brandon’s mother was inspired to start Open Door so that he and his sister would be able to attend preschool together, at a time when inclusion was not widely embraced or available; Shirley Rubinett, who has supported Open Door’s mission for over 25 years, was joined by four Open Door alumni: her grandchildren; and MariBen Ramsey, whose broad and deep service to the Austin non-profit community exemplifies the Open Door values of social justice and inclusion.

In all, the event was a great success, netting more than $90,000 for the organization. Fall Fete Co-chairs Rushmi Kumar and Cathy McHorse noted that, “The event brought together people from various walks of life to celebrate, in one charming evening, the values that Open Door instills in its children everyday. The funds raised will be invested in building on this 40 year history to nurture and inspire Austin’s young children.”
